In 1937, the first Achievement Day took place in Union County. It was created to showcase the many crafts such as rug making that Home Demonstration Clubs created. They made quilts and much much more. They did this at the local high school. Weather effected the turnout out, so the following year (1938) Chairperson Pearl Snodderly. had 54 women compete from the various communities where they met.
Note- in 2024 the Big Ridge Home Demonstration Club still has Achievement Day in the Fall. Members enter their Arts and Crafts into the local competition in Spring, if a first or second place is won, the member can compete in the Eastern Region Achievement Day. If they win first or second in the Eastern Region, they compete in the State Convention. Union County has had many State Winners, especially in the Quilt Category. Prizes include ribbons and cash prizes. The Home Demonstration Clubs are now called the FCE (Family Education Community) Clubs under the direction of the University of Tennessee. At one time they were called EDC a for Extension Home Demonstration. There use to be an Annual Homemakers Picnic for all the different clubs. The last County Picnic was hosted by Hubbs Grove member Connie Buckner at her Lake House around 2017.
Also in 1937, There were two Fairs the 4-Hers and the Home Demonstration Club members could compete in, the LaFollette Tri County Fair and the Knoxville TVA & I Fair. Today it’s just the TVA & I Fair.
There was also a Ball Jar Contest. In 2024 the UC Extensions has a Canning Contest at the Fall Heritage Festival. This is an annual event for anyone to participate in.
Also in 1937, the first 4-H and Home Demonstration Camps for girls were held at Big Ridge State Park here in Maynardville.
According to the 1942 records, the Boys 4-H Camp was held in Sharps Chapel at the Peninsula of Chuck Swan.
According to the Extension Records, in 1962, 4-H Camp cost a camper $3.00 to attend a 3 day camp. That covered food, lodging and transportation. The Summer of 2024 cost for a 4-H Camper was $360.00, for a five day camp in Greenville at the Clyde Austin Facility. This covers lodging, transportation, food and supplies. The 4-H campers raise funds thru the Tractor Supply Business in Halls. The barracks are now air conditioned and there is even a lodge.
