Ensuring Public Safety and Paving the Way for Economic Development in Union County

The Union County Legislative body meeting in regular session at Maynardville, Tennessee, on the 11th Day of June, 2018, adopted a resolution drafted and presented by 1st District Commissioner Stan Dail “Ensuring Public Safety and Paving the Way for Economic Development in Union County.”

Shoelaces

I saw a picture of a man tying up his tenny shoes or Nikes or whatever they are called nowadays. The laces were long, white and had those little metal whatsamacallits at the end of each lace. What I would have given for a set of them back in the day. Shoelaces during the Great Depression were not very sturdy. We always needed to have an extra pair in a drawer somewhere.

Independence Day Memories

The founding fathers could not have picked a better day for a national holiday. The spring rains have usually passed. Summer has arrived in earnest. The Fourth of July is an ideal date to reserve for outdoor activities such as picnicking, swimming, or watching a public fireworks show.

For young boys, Independence Day often holds a special allure. Around the age of six or seven, I put my best effort in to convincing my father to take me to the see the fireworks. His response “If you have seen one you have seen them all” anything but resonated with me.

Wildlife Cover

From past biology classes you know that all animals require the right habitat that provides all that they need to survive. Habitat needs can be broken down into three basic components: reliable water, food, and cover. While water and food needs are easy to understand, cover is more dynamic, and its use varies from day to day and season to season.

Global Burden of Low Back Pain

A series of groundbreaking research reports in the prestigious medical journal The Lancet warn that low back pain is a major health burden globally—across developed and developing nations—and that the current use of X-rays and scans, opioids, injections and surgery to investigate and treat the condition is useless, unnecessary and harmful.

Stepping on the Dog

I was on the receiving end of one of my Mother’s retorts, or as I prefer to call them, lightning bolts.

Mom and I used to cook lunch at my grandparents’ house after church on Sundays. And I would bring my dog Little John with me. Let me tell you, my grandparents loved that little dog. They used to dog-sit him while I was at work. I came to pick him up one day and they had driven him around the block. He was restless and they thought he needed a ride. I’m not making this up. They even kept a picture of him on their mantle.

Nighttime in the Country

The power has to go out for you to see the stars at night as brightly as we did during the Great Depression. We have a yard light now, two of them really, and we can see the glow of the night lights of Knoxville on the Southeast horizon. There might be a shooting star but we don't bother looking for one. There are too many other things to do. After all, the best television programs are on at night. No, we don't linger outside like we used to do.

Mincey’s Musings
Year One, Week Twenty-Five

Once again, we find ourselves close to an election. Our founding fathers saw it necessary to create our national system of government to have a balance of power that would prevent any one group from becoming dictatorial. That is why we have a President as head of the Executive Branch, the Senate and House of Representatives that serve as the Legislative Branch (the only branch of our national government that has its own balance of power), and the Supreme Court Justices as heads of the Judicial Branch.
