Union County 4-Her competes nationally

Could you give a speech on an important topic affecting society today with only three minutes to prepare? In early January, that is exactly what Kaleb Hanna, a Union Count 4-H member, did when he gave an impromptu speech at the 4-H Western National Roundup in Denver, Colorado.
With one minute to choose from three previously unknown topics, only three minutes to make notes on a 5’x7’ notecard, and three to five minutes to deliver his speech, Kaleb stood tall and spoke to three judges and an audience that had gathered from all around the United States. As a participant in 4-H since 4th grade, Kaleb used the skills he has gained in speaking and personal development to address what leadership is and why leadership is important for youth today. After delivering a powerful speech, just under five minutes, he thanked several people here in Union County, shook the judges’ hands, and took a seat.
But that was just the beginning. Most would think that this would be the climactic part of the day. However, as Kaleb sat and listened to speeches by other participants, he continued to learn and hear passionate assertions from his peers. This is where, as an onlooker, one can begin to see the magic happen. All participants were respectful and encouraging to each other. They listened in a supportive manner as their peers faced the challenge of public speaking. With each speech, confidence filled the room. It is an understatement to say that the competition was fierce.
Attending Western National Roundup is the highest level of competition for a 4-H public speaking participant. While students are there for various competitions, the draw of the conference is the ability to network and learn from other students all across the country.
Coinciding with the National Western Stock show, the conference begins by paying respects to traditional cattle drives with a livestock parade in downtown Denver.
Students participated in professional development workshops by nationally recognized motivational speakers. Of course, a good amount of fun was thrown in with dances, magic shows, and other activities in the afternoon.
Standing at the 10th floor of the Denver Renaissance Hotel, where all the action takes place, you can look down the open architecture and see students conversing and engaging on the main floor below— a gathering of students who share a common interest in preparing for their future.
"What a great time I had at 4-H Western National Round-up; there were over seven hundred kids attending! Competing in the Impromptu Speaking Contest really pushed me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to continue trying to accomplish my goals.
““Building Your Life” was my favorite motivational workshop. It is always great seeing my 4-H friends and feeling our comradery. I would go back and do it all again in a heartbeat!” said Kaleb.
This opportunity was the result of Kaleb’s hard work, but also contributions from Union County Farm Bureau and Dr. Mark Cloud of Summit Medical Group in Halls.
To bring things full circle, recently there were over 50 students who participated in the Union County 4-H Public Speaking contest. 4-H is a youth development organization that truly makes an impact on the lives of 4th-12th grade youth in the state of Tennessee.
Students of all backgrounds and interests may participate. If you have questions about how your child can participate, contact the UT Extension Union County office at 865-992-8038.
