UCBPA awards scholarships

The Union County Business & Professional Association awarded a total of 10 scholarships for 2024. UCBPA annually awards the Tracy Jeffreys Memorial Academic Scholarship to honor extensive commitment to educational achievement, mentoring of youth and professional ethics, as well as the tremendous amount of service that Marvin and Doris Jeffreys have given to Union County. The scholarship also memorializes Tracy, their deceased daughter.

This year's recipient, Zoey Smith, balanced volunteer work with academic excellence and aspires to one day return to Union County as a speech therapist with a bachelors degree and a masters degree from UT Chattanooga.
The UCBPA awards the Career & Technical Scholarship for outstanding achievement in a vocational field. When asked why he was the best candidate, Ayden Barton said, “Because I have a proven record of meeting high expectations and achievement.” He will attend TCAT in the plumbing and pipe fitting program.

The UCBPA Founders Scholarship for Service honors the UCBPA Founders, Emily Link, Deloris Graves, Mary Lee Vining, and R. Larry Smith, the first president. The scholarship rewards students who have served the community in a variety of ways. This year's recipient, Johnathan “Trot” Russell, spent 160 hours volunteering in nursing homes, keeping athletic records, coaching young children, and even umpiring games.

Three years ago, the UCBPA began the Opportunity Scholarship Program. Academic Opportunity Scholarships recognize outstanding merit in an academic field and exceptional passion for the creative arts.

The CTE Opportunity Scholarships recognize merit and offer encouragement in a technical field. This scholarship for service recognizes the importance and value of community service not only for the receiver, but also for the giver.
Two seniors are receiving Academic Opportunity Scholarships: Addison Harrison, who will attend Walters State Community College in business management, and Anthony Baker, who plans to study at Lincoln Memorial University to become a nurse or a pharmacist.

All four seniors who are recipients of the CTE Opportunity Scholarships will attend the Tennessee College of Applied Technology in Knoxville.

Makayla McClain, Kinsey Widner, and Avery Brantley will seek a license in cosmetology, and Sierra Tabor will study to become a surgical technician. Bree Corum will attend UT Knoxville to become an occupational therapist with the aid of an Opportunity Scholarship for Service.

With the awarding of these scholarships, the UCBPA will have invested over $133,000 to help graduating seniors reach their post-high school dreams.
