In the Senior High Division, contestants gave two speeches February 12 at the UT Ag Campus. The first speech was a prepared speech of the 4-H member’s chosen topic, but had to relate to 4-H. Next, the participants competed in the Extemporaneous Contest with an assigned topic and only two minutes to prepare.
Kaleb Hanna represented 12th grade, Jessie Garcia represented 11th grade, Travis Hanna represented 10th grade, and Meradeth Whitley represented 9th grade. Travis Hanna was awarded 1st place overall and will advance to the State Public Speaking Competition during Tennessee 4-H Congress held in Nashville in March. Kaleb Hanna was awarded 3rd, Jessie Garcia was awarded 7th, and Meradeth Whitley was awarded 7th.
For students in 4th-8th grades, the contest was held in Sevierville on February 22. Participants chose any topic and gave a prepared speech. Union County 4-H members competed against competitors from the Big 9 Division of Counties which includes Blount, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Hamblen, Jefferson, Knox, Sevier and Union.
Ella Ryder represented the 4th grade and received a participation award. McKenzie Muncey represented the 5th grade and was awarded 1st place. Gracie Tindell represented the 8th grade and was also awarded 1st place in her division.
Martin Shaffer volunteered to serve as a judge for the sub-regional contest. We wish to thank him for his valuable contribution to helping youth learn by doing.
Congratulations to all our competitors. You represented Union County well!
