Tub Prayers
I often receive the strangest realizations in the strangest places. One day, I was cleaning the bathtub when I had a brilliant idea. I had found the perfect place.
Before we go any further, there’s something about me that will help explain why I was so excited about the bathtub being the perfect place. Besides being a klutz, I am an only child. Unlike my sibling- blessed childhood friends, I didn’t have somebody else around me all the time. So, I became very used to my privacy.
In fact, when I was first married, I was worried about how I would adjust to being around Tim every day. We’ve been happily married for 33 ½ years, so I like to think I have adjusted well. But there is still one thing that I am very private about: my prayers.
When I go to the Lord in prayer, I want it to just be the two of us. I know lots of people who have a closet or a small place to go for their prayer time. To be honest, it was hard to find a place in the house where I felt comfortable enough to do that. And when I am especially troubled about things, I pray out loud.
So, I was cleaning the tub when the realization hit me. I was on my knees and in a very private place. When you are in the bathroom with the door shut and locked, you are left alone. Even though somebody may pound on the door, they won’t get inside unless you let them.
I decided that would be my place of solace and prayer. Every morning, before I brush my teeth and put on make-up (I don’t want to scare anybody), I get on my knees and lean against the side of that tub.
The door is shut and it is just the Lord and myself. And I find myself praying out loud more often.
Now, I know that sounds rather unconventional to some people, and to be honest, I guess it is, but it works for me. In fact, the Lord and I have had some great conversations at the tub, and while there, He has revealed a few things to me.
I told this to one of my Christian author friends and she said if it works, go with it.
“Rejoice evermore. Pray without ceasing. In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. Quench not the Spirit.” 1 Thessalonians 5: 16-19 (KJV)
So, if you ask me to pray for you, don’t be surprised if you receive a text or a message with a tub and praying hands emojis.
