The Joy Of Music

As I was growing up, in a family of eight, music was almost always in the air. One of my dad’s brothers, who played the fiddle and most any other instrument he wanted to play, was a frequent guest on radio programs in Knoxville, Nashville and other towns or wherever he could get a gig. Another one of my dad’s brothers was also an excellent musician though he never pursued a career in music. I guess the fact that his brother was killed in an automobile accident while traveling may have influenced him to choose another occupation. He had all the skill needed and was an accomplished musician, but decided to play just for the joy of music. Our family and friends have all enjoyed good times listening to his music. I remember, as a kid, staying up late at night listening to him, my oldest brother and other family members play music. Music was part of our life. It was a joyous time. I guess music seems to be part of our genes.

My sister’s grandson, (Justin Smith) who is also related to the late country music artist Carl Smith, is also a very excellent musician. He plays the piano, bass guitar, fiddle, and other instruments. Although he is visually impaired it doesn't keep him from playing excellent music. It almost seems as though his inability to see things the way we do gives his hearing an extra advantage.

Justin’s love for gospel music is a wonderful blessing to our Church as he plays bass almost every service. All of our musicians depend on him using his extraordinary talent. He says his talent is “A gift from God. I want to give God all the credit and I love gospel music.”

Justin is now offering bass guitar lessons at his grandparent’s place of business. His lessons are easy to follow and he recommends practicing a little each day. His method of teaching makes learning to play easy. Some folks are able to play a song after just a few lessons.
