Jesus Picture

Jesus Picture

It’s not something I am too proud of, but I did it. Or rather I didn’t do it. You see, I got out of church for a while. After I started back, I realized I didn’t have any pictures of Jesus in the house. So, guess what I did next? Yep. I went Jesus picture shopping.

I looked at all kinds of Jesus pictures and none of them felt right. Finally, I found one that I really, really liked. That is until I looked at the price tag. You know, it just didn’t seem right to go in debt for it. I didn’t think Jesus would like that.

Then, I remembered a discussion we had in Sunday School. Don’t pray to God just for the big problems. Pray to Him for the small things as well. Pray to Him all of the time. So, I prayed for a Jesus picture He wanted me to have.

A couple of days later, Mamaw Jo came downstairs from the attic with a painting in her hand and asked me if I wanted it. Now, I know what all of you are thinking: “It was a Jesus picture!” Yes it was, but this wasn’t just any Jesus picture. When I saw it, I was blown away.

At that time, I hadn’t seen it in about 18 years. Back in 1975, my parents and I were driving down Clinton Hwy late one evening. My mom saw an artist with his work displayed in a parking lot. She asked my dad to pull over so she could look at them. To this day, I can still remember walking around and admiring the paintings.

She found one of the last supper and bought it for my great grandmother, Mamaw Girdle/Myrtle, as a Christmas present. Mamaw Girdle/Myrtle hung it in the kitchen next to the table. She passed away 5 years later. Mamaw Jo took it down and sat it in the attic. And that’s where it stayed until she found it that day and brought it downstairs.

Today, it hangs in my kitchen and over my table. Now when I look it, I not only think of Jesus and what He did for us, but I also think of my sweet Mamaw Girdle/Myrtle. Even though I still miss her, I have the peaceful reassurance that she is with Him and I will see her again one day.
