Humble Pie

Brooke Cox

“Miss Brooke! Miss Brooke!” I felt the tug on the back of my blouse.

I turned around and looked down into the wide blue eyes of a little boy in my Sunday school class. “Did you know an angel argued with Satan over Moses’ body and the angel didn’t use any bad words?”

At that time, I taught 2nd grade Sunday school. On this particular Sunday, the other teacher and I had talked to the children about not using bad words. We used examples of when we are upset or get into an argument.

The little boy came up to me as soon as we dismissed class. After he finished, my first thought was that I had never heard that story. No, I didn’t think he had made it up at all. He was too excited and I could tell he totally believed it.

You see, I had been raised in church and over the years, I had attended many a Vacation Bible School and Bible study. I thought I knew all of the stories of the Bible.

I didn’t want to burst his bubble by doubting his story, especially in front of the other children.

So, I simply asked, “Where is this in the Bible?”
He didn’t know, but bless his heart, his face was still beaming. I worried about how to tell him that I didn’t think it was a real story. Thankfully, God placed a thought into my head. He has to help me like that quite often.

“I’ll look it up this week and we’ll talk about it next Sunday. How’s that?”

“Thank you, Miss Brooke.” With that, he skipped off.

I was relieved that I had side-stepped disappointing him right then, but I worried about how to handle it the next Sunday. In fact, the next few days I went over different scenarios in my head of how to address him. I even contemplated talking to him alone before the class started.

Unable to put it off any longer, I sat down with my Bible and begin my search. First, I looked in the back for Moses references. Yes, I knew there would be numerous ones, especially in Exodus, but then I found a reference in Jude. Jude 1:9 to be exact. I flipped through my Bible and read the verse.

The hair on the back of my neck stood up. The little boy was right and I was wrong: totally and completely wrong.

“Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil he disputed about the body of Moses, durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, The Lord rebuke thee.” Jude 1:9 (KJV)
I guess you can say the Lord put me in my place with that one. I didn’t know as much about the Bible as I thought I did. And God used a sweet child to reveal my ignorance, or better yet, my arrogance to me.

“Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.” Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)

You know, there’s no way we mere humans can know everything about the Bible. We can’t even scratch the surface of its rich and profound treasures. Only The Lord knows everything there is to know. A fancy term for that is omniscient.

“For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than out heart, and knoweth all things.” 1 John 3:20 (KJV)

The next Sunday morning, I told the whole class about what the little boy had known that I didn’t. And how important it is to read the Bible and look up things for yourself instead of taking things at other people’s word.

Bless his heart, the little boy was still beaming and I was still digesting my humble pie.
