Healthy lifestyles and the farmers market
UT Extension Union County and the Union County Farmers Market are at it once again, partnering to create healthier, more active lifestyles.
This year, when “Union Gets Movin” and we “Walk the Market,” Nourish Knoxville will be sponsoring our new program, Nourish Moves! The program is designed to promote a more active lifestyle increasing overall health, as well as building community.
After all, the market is “where the community meets” and we’d like to encourage families and people of all ages—our community—to meet up and walk.
When you arrive at the market each Saturday, just sign in at the UT Extension booth and pick up your pedometer for the day, then walk the market and surrounding areas.
When finished, you may exchange the pedometer for the Market Bucks you have earned. Market Bucks may be spent on farm fresh fruit, vegetables, herbs, mushrooms and food producing plants—farm fresh food to promote healthy eating. Market Bucks will be awarded based on steps taken during the market trip.
Since our goal is to create healthier, more active lifestyles, during the first six weeks, participants will receive a weekly e-newsletter with health tips, a healthy recipe and, if there is enough interest, a schedule of additional walks throughout the week.
We would like to encourage you to join other walkers and make walking a part of your regular health routine. The real fun begins after the first six weeks as various vendors at the market will be hosting the sign ins. Look for the walking sign each week. For every four markets or walks at which you sign in, you will be entered in a drawing for some very special incentives.
May is National Preservation Month and we have partnered with Preservation Union County for a specially themed walk on Saturday, May 13. There will be no market that day due to Union County High School graduation. Join us to discover the location of this mystery walk and others throughout the season.
